Does our thought belong to us?
• The source of our thought is nothing but our memory or the modification of our memory (the imagination). Memory is nothing but a residual impression in the mind created by an external event. Neurologically memory involves a chemical change in the nerve endings of the brain. Memory is just like a footprint in the soil. Every event in this world passes away but our brains hold the memories of the event just like the soil holds the impressions of the feet even after the subject walks away.
• Who is the generator of the footprint, Is it the soil or the subject who walks on the soil? It is the subject. In the same way who is the generator of our memories and thoughts? It is the external world and events happening in it. Footprints don't come to the soil from within the soil. They are not the property of the soil. In the same way, our thoughts are not generated within the mind. They are just footprints of external happenings. In other words thoughts are residue of the events in time which we tend to hold in the form of neurotransmitters in the brain. The thoughts don’t belong to us.
